Ogu uses the Latin script with special markings (diacritics) to change the sound of the vowels. Important Note: We are Ogu people #Gunnuvi — not #Egun. Our counting system starts from ÒDÉ / DÒPÓ and continues endlessly. Let us begin. OGU NUMBER COUNTING (1–10) 1 — Dòpó / Òdé (Doh-poh / Oh-day) 2 — Àwè (Ah-way) 3 — Àtọ̀n (Ah-taun) [nasal] 4 — Ẹ̀nẹ̀ (Eh-neh) 5 — Àtọ́n (Ah-taun) [high tone] 6 — Ṣin-Dopó (5+1) - (Chin-doh-po) 7 — Ṣin-àwè (5+2) - (Chin-ah-way) 8 — Ṣin-àtọ̀n (5+3) - (Chin-ah-taun) 9 — Ṣin-ẹ̀nẹ̀ (5+4) - (Chin-eh-neh) 10 — ÀÓ (Ah-oh) The numbers listed follow a "base-5" logic for the second half of the sequence. For example, 6 (Ṣindòpó) is literally a combination of "Ṣin" and 1 (Dòpó). • 1–5: Unique names. • 6–9: Additive prefixes (Ṣin-) applied to numbers 1–4. • 10: A new root word (Àó) Note on Orthography: In the list, "5" and "3" appear the same (Àtọ̀n vs Atọ̀n). In standard Ogu, 3 is usually Atọ̀n and 5 is Atọ́n (note the high tone mark on the last vowel). Quick Pronunciation Tips: • The Dot Below (Ẹ, Ọ): This indicates an "open" vowel. Ẹ sounds like "egg," while E sounds like "hay." • The Tones: The marks over the letters (like À or Ó) tell you if your voice should go up, stay flat, or go down. This is crucial because a change in tone can change the meaning of a word! Culture Note: The "Ṣin" Prefix You might notice the word "Ṣin" in the number list (Ṣindòpó, Ṣinawe, etc.). In Ogu, this prefix is often used to show a connection or a "plus" state. In counting, it marks the transition from the first five fingers to the second set.
