The Badagry Tourism Development Centre (BTDC) has launched a new landmark, the “I LOVE BADAGRY” symbol, as part of a strategic effort to highlight the town’s rich history, culture, and economic opportunities. The monument was inaugurated on December 26, 2025, opposite Wema Bank along Joseph Dosu Way.
The initiative seeks to reposition Badagry as more than a historical footnote, promoting it as a vibrant destination for culture, tourism, and commerce. Hon. Babatunde #Hunpe , Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, framed the unveiling as the fulfilment of a campaign promise. "This project reflects our commitment to unlocking Badagry’s tourism potential. It is deeply rooted in our history and the ancestral beginnings of our town," he said.
Chairman Hunpe explained the symbolic significance of the site, noting that the location is historically linked to Agbethe, Badagry’s founder. He encouraged both residents and members of the diaspora to embrace the symbol as a unifying emblem: "Let every Badagry resident and visitor carry this message in their heart: 'I Love Badagry.' Together, we can promote our town."
Prince Olu Kosoko, BTDC Board Chairman, highlighted the cultural narrative behind the symbol. "'I Love Badagry' celebrates every facet of our identity—food, attire, music, water, and culture. This landmark is not just aesthetic; it tells a story and will serve as the centrepiece of marketing campaigns designed to position Badagry on the global stage." He also emphasised the town’s economic advantages, citing its strategic location near the border and potential for cross-border trade.
Mr. Sewude Akande, Director General of the BTDC, outlined the centre’s role in sustainable tourism. "Our mission is to promote and preserve Badagry’s tourism assets, protect the environment, and foster collaboration among stakeholders. We support government efforts while facilitating connections between investors and local communities." Akande expressed optimism about the next two years, anticipating enhanced awareness of heritage and greater investor engagement.
The unveiling attracted notable dignitaries, including Dr. Armstrong Takang, MD/CEO of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), and Mr. Rasaq Olajuwon Akinyemi, Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical) at Nigeria’s Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). Other officials present included Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, House of Representatives Member for Badagry Federal Constituency, and Hon. Bonu Solomon, House of Assembly Member for Badagry Constituency 01, alongside BTDC members Mr. Femi Iroko, Mr. Ope Oke, and Mr. Sewedo Balogun.
The launch of the “I LOVE BADAGRY” symbol marks a bold step in promoting the town’s cultural heritage, encouraging tourism, and attracting investment, while fostering pride among residents and the diaspora.
